Victoria Mboko was in tears after the fall which forced her to retire while leading the second set against Karolina Pliskova.

The tournament later said her retirement from singles was due to a left knee injury.

That has cast doubt on her doubles partnership with Serena.

If Mboko withdraws, the 19-year-old cannot be replaced by another doubles player, so the pair would have to give their quarter-final opponents, Laura Siegemund and Leylah Fernandez, a walkover into the final four.
