A terrifying £158 million “roller-coaster” bridge in is among the ‘most dangerous’ in the world. 

The Eshima Ohashi Bridge gained a reputation for being one of the most dangerous bridges in the world due to its steep incline. 

The bridge connects the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato and spans Lake Nakaumi. 

Its design features a steep incline on both sides, with a gradient of about 6.1 percent on one side and 5.1 percent on the other. 

This steepness was necessary to allow ships to pass underneath the bridge, given the geographical constraints of the area.

The scary bridge even appeared on the India Times list of the world’s 25 ‘most dangerous’ structures that only the bravest would dare to cross.

While it appears incredibly steep when viewed from certain angles, it is important to note that it is not actually dangerous in terms of structural integrity or safety standards.

Despite its dramatic appearance, the Eshima Ohashi Bridge is engineered to meet strict safety standards and has guardrails and other safety features in place.

The Eshima Ohashi Bridge was built to replace a drawbridge that once crossed Lake Nakaumi. The drawbridge often caused traffic delays of seven to eight minutes when ships passed through, and it only allowed vehicles weighing under 14 tonnes to cross.

Additionally, the drawbridge had a daily capacity of only 4,000 vehicles. With traffic volumes continually rising, there was a pressing need for a new bridge. 

The Eshima Ohashi Bridge was constructed to provide a quicker and more reliable way to cross Lake Nakaumi.

This bridge is a well-liked tourist destination in addition to being a significant piece of infrastructure. It offers a beautiful view of the Lake and its surroundings, and serves as a popular path among cyclists. 

Cyclists can enjoy the rush of going across the bridge while admiring the beautiful surroundings. Views of Daikon Island rising out of Lake Nakaumi and Mount Daisen in the distance can be seen from the top of the bridge.
