Terror as teen and boy have legs ripped off in two sharks attacks | World | News

The 19-year-old girl was mauled by a predator as she swam with friends and relatives off Boa Viagem beach, in the city of Recife, Brazil, on June 1. Just a day earlier on May 31, an 11-year-old boy was also attacked and lost his leg off Piedade Beach, which is part of the Recife metropolitan area.

The shocking attacks left both youngsters fighting for life after the incidents and local media reports said they received emergency surgery in nearby hospitals.

Latest reports said that the girl, who also suffered injuries to her left hand and hip, was described as being in a serious condition. The boy was said by medics to be stable.

The New York Post reported Jonas André de Lima, a security guard, went into the sea to help the 19-year-old girl who was a relative. He told local media: “She was very badly injured and already without her leg.

“I went into the water because she was drifting a little further away and losing strength.

“I don’t know, so I grabbed her by the arm, brought her out, pulling her, swimming back to shore, and people came and helped me.”

In a harrowing account, the uncle of the 11-year-old boy who was attacked told local media the traumatised youngster “was conscious and just kept begging me not to let him die”.

He added: “We were all in the sea before the attack, and I had just left the water and left the kids in the sea.

“Then I heard a strange noise, and when I turned round, all I could see was blood. I didn’t think twice and raced into the water to get my nephew out.”
