Out of sight, out of mind. It’s the ultimate rule of modern football, and nobody knows it better than Ivan Toney. When the former Brentford talisman packed his bags for Al-Ahli two years ago, he effectively vanished from the collective consciousness of Premier League supporters. One moment he was amongst the most sought-after strikers in England, the next he had become a mere footnote in the Saudi Arabian gold rush.

Yet football has a remarkable knack for turning on a sixpence. And thanks to Thomas Tuchel, Toney is suddenly charging back onto Manchester United‘s radar. Tuchel’s decision to hand Toney a shock recall for the World Cup is precisely the sort of wildcard move that keeps the sport wonderfully unpredictable. For Toney, it represents a career lifeline. For United, it could prove the ultimate transfer gift wrapped in a Three Lions bow.

Let’s be frank — United’s striking department still requires some attention this summer. Yes, they brought in Benjamin Sesko, and yes, the Slovenian has been performing… adequately.

He has displayed glimpses of the lofty potential that persuaded the club to recruit him in the first place. Yet ‘okay’ doesn’t restore you to the summit.

Right now, Sesko looks like a young striker who could benefit greatly from some serious competition — someone to drive him to greater heights and share the goalscoring responsibility, without entirely derailing his progression as the long-term first-choice No. 9.

United don’t require another £70million superstar to obstruct Sesko’s path — or worse, another Rasmus Hojlund stinking up the place like an absurdly expensive wheel of cheese you can’t bring yourself to throw out. What they need is a seasoned, ruthless alternative. They need an Ivan Toney.

Under normal circumstances, suggesting United sign a striker from the Saudi Pro League would provoke a fan backlash of catastrophic proportions. Old Trafford would understandably bristle at the notion of recruiting someone from a division where defensive intensity can resemble a Sunday league hangover.

But this is precisely where Tuchel has done United an enormous favour.

The World Cup is the ultimate narrative-changer. Should Toney remain in Saudi Arabia, a move to United becomes a PR catastrophe. But if he nets a goal or two on North American soil this summer, the entire perception shifts in an instant.

Suddenly, he’s no longer a Saudi outcast — he’s England’s clutch super-sub. The backlash dissolves, replaced by supporters clamouring for the club to get the deal over the line.

Tuchel is essentially handing United the perfect shield against a toxic fan reaction. He’s absorbing the risk so they needn’t bother. And let’s not pretend Toney has forgotten where the back of the net is.

He has been scoring goals for fun out there – 72 in 93 matches – just as he did for Brentford before his departure when England’s elite were sniffing around with real intent.

He remains a proven, battle-hardened Premier League marksman and as a summer transfer opportunity, this is an absolute no-brainer. Toney would in all likelihood represent an exceptionally cost-effective, value-for-money acquisition.

He resolves United’s short-term predicament — delivering instant goals, physical presence and additional firepower up front — without creating a single long-term complication.

He wouldn’t obstruct Sesko’s journey towards becoming the focal point, nor would his transfer fee prevent INEOS from venturing out and securing another world-class superstar in a year or two should the chance arise.

It’s the low-risk, high-reward deal United have missed out on far too often in recent years. They simply needed somebody to bridge the gap and sell the concept to the supporters.

Thomas Tuchel may have done precisely that. Over to you, United.
