Tourist rides world’s oldest rollercoaster and 1 detail wows

POV (point of view) videos from rollercoasters are a fantastic way to feel like you’re in on the action without actually having to leave your bed.

So when one man rode the world’s oldest continuously operating roller coaster, The Scenic Railway, people were excited to see what it’s actually like.

The ride is located in Luna Park Melbourne in St Kilda, Victoria, Australia,so theme park enthusiast The Coaster Scoop headed there for us latest video.

Then he shared what it was like to be on the roller coaster in a fully immersive video that took you from the start of the ride to the very end.

At the start of the video, some viewers may be confused because the ride clearly says ‘do not stand up’. But as the four-minute clip continues, it becomes clear that the person standing up is actually the person manually operating the ride.

“This historic wooden roller coaster reaches speeds of around 60 km/h on a 967-metre track that circles the entire park, with a brakeman standing on the train to control its speed,” the caption of the video explained.

So what about the person who stood up in the middle of the carriage? He’s literally controlling the speed of the rollercoaster because he’s pulling back the brake every single time the carriages seem to be picking up a little bit too much speed.

When going uphill, the brakeman moved the brake into a forward position so the roller coaster could gain enough momentum to drag itself and the people in the carriages upward.

The man behind The Coaster Scoop was asking the brakeman to go “full throttle” when they went down a dip – and full throttle they did go, as the rollercoaster zoomed down the dip, and he put the brake on as it went round another bend.

They commented that the ride was “pretty smooth” considering that it’s more than 100 years old.

What’s more, they were impressed with the view they were able to see from the top of the rollercoaster.

Then there were several drops where the brakeman just allowed the coaster to free fall – and then slammed the brakes on when it went around another corner, so it wouldn’t gain too much momentum.

It looked like a really exciting ride all in all, but people were unable to take their eyes off one detail in the video. The brakeman stole the show and received more comments than the ride itself!

Someone wrote: “I love how chill the operator is. When the camera came by, he just snapped a quick peace sign and got back to work”.

Another penned: “Wait, so with all these hills and all that speed, dude just stands there like it’s nothing? He looks like he’s operating a tram”.

A third said something similar, sharing: “That one operator up front doesn’t sit for one second, as if this is nothing but a tram. What a daredevil!”

Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: “That ride operator is my hero.”
