Trump teases ‘really big news’ as he’s set to address the US in hours | World | News

US President Donald Trump has announced he will hold a speech to the nation overnight, teasing “really, really big news”. His plans to address the US were announced with a post on his platform Truth Social written in third person. The message read: “President Trump will be making a Speech to the Nation on Thursday evening, at 9 P.M. Eastern. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

While the post, published on July 13, didn’t hint at all at what the focus of the speech may be, the US President confirmed on Tuesday while speaking to reporters he will discuss election integrity. Asked whether the speech concerns elections, he said: “Well, I’d rather save it, it will concern that subject, and we’ll have a couple of other things to say, but I’d rather save it.”

Teasing he’d discuss “really, really big news”, he also said: “It doesn’t get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country.” He added: “We’ll be discussing other things too, but it’s going to be a very big announcement.”

Previous speeches to the nations included an address following the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Mr Trump has given two other prime-time speeches during his second term. One focused on his administration’s economic record last December, and another providing an update on the conflict with Iran.

Ahead of the speech, tensions in the Middle East remain high. After a ceasefire was agreed in April and a memorandum of understanding was signed in June, Iran and the US have been trading fire this week.

Mr Trump previously announced reinstating a blockade of Iranian ports, lifted last month.

Tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz. Talks have stalled amid the escalating violent struggle over the strait, triggered by Iran attacking cargo ships.
