Tuchel to recall axed England star for World Cup as Toney offered hope | Football | Sport

Thomas Tuchel is poised to include THREE strikers in his England squad for the World Cup – and that should pave the way for Ollie Watkins. England manager Tuchel announces his 26-man squad for the trip to the United States on Friday, and his attacking options remain a subject of intense discussion ahead of the World Cup.

Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane is undoubtedly guaranteed his place as England’s captain, leading goalscorer and talisman, with the striker certain to be among the first names on the team sheet. However, the 26-man squad is anticipated to permit Tuchel to select three strikers – and the remaining two spots have been fiercely contested.

Aston Villa forward Watkins was omitted from England’s previous squad in March, but he has responded magnificently since, netting nine goals following that snub, including four in his most recent three matches.

That has captured Tuchel’s attention, and Watkins appears a strong favourite to secure his place, with reports suggesting he features on the 55-man provisional list submitted to FIFA last Monday.

Tuchel has privately been impressed by Watkins’ performances, mentality and resolve, which has created an opportunity for him to return ahead of Friday’s squad reveal.

In the past, some England managers have selected just two conventional centre-forwards in 23-man squads, but the expanded group for the 48-team tournament, to be contested in challenging weather and climatic conditions, provides greater flexibility.

That could create an opening for overlooked striker Ivan Toney, who has been in devastating form in the Saudi Pro League and has established himself as a penalty expert ahead of potential shoot-outs.

Brighton’s Danny Welbeck remains another viable contender and has been mentioned on numerous occasions by Tuchel as someone he admires for both his quality and attitude.

Tuchel called up Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke for the squad in March, but the Tottenham striker is currently sidelined through injury while the Leeds man departed the camp after just one appearance.

Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold could find himself on the fringes of the 26-man squad despite injury doubts surrounding Tino Livramento.

Tuchel also cast his eye over Chelsea‘s recently recovered defender Levi Colwill, who caught the eye in the FA Cup final despite his side’s defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.
