Unlikely England fan spotted on ‘UK’s most patriotic estate’ | Weird | News
Nothing unites people like football, and the whole of England stood together in celebration as Harry Kane and the boys sensationally beat Mexico to make it through to the World Cup quarter-finals last night. Pubs stayed open until 5am as two goals from Jude Bellingham in as many minutes, and a third from Harry Kane, saw England come out on top 3-2, despite Mexico playing on home turf.
And there are few places where cheers will have been louder than in the little corner of London branded “one of England’s most patriotic estates”. The Kirby Estate in southeast London is widely known for its proud display of dozens of St George’s Cross flags hanging from windows, gates, balconies, and lampposts, as well as colourful murals celebrating some of the country’s top sportsmen and women. And it seems the patriotic feeling has attracted some unusual supporters from a bit further afield.
A video posted on TikTok by the account @kirbyestate – which regularly shows off the lively displays and community feeling in the area – showed a very unusual visitor had popped by ahead of the game. The video shows a Dalek with an England flag wrapped around it, signing the iconic chorus to 1996 anthem Three Lions in its bone-chilling robotic voice.
The video is accompanied by the iconic Doctor Who theme tune, and features the overlaid caption: “Just when you think you’ve seen it all on here.” The person filming the video can be heard laughing and saying “that’s amazing”, before the red and gold alien is seen before a mural of England midfielder Eberechi Eze, who grew up near the estate, continuing the iconic “it’s coming home” chant.
It is also seen with a replica of the Jules Rimet trophy on its head, before the clip ends with the Dalek taking a shot at a goal, prodding the ball past the young goalkeeper and into the back of the net. A caption over the clip reads: “Keeper should have done better!!”
The Daleks are one of the most iconic villains in TV history, first appearing in Doctor Who in 1963. The terrifying aliens with their iconic pepper pot-esque design and shrill battle cry of “Exterminate!” have since become an icon of British television, and have regularly reappeared to battle The Doctor over the past six decades.
That said, they’re more often seen trying to conquer the universe than they are supporting the Three Lions – but at least they have good taste.
Three Lions, written by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, and performed by Brit-pop icons the Lightning Seeds, was first released ahead of the Euro 1996 tournament. The chorus of “It’s coming home” has since become a common chant as England do battle on the field.
England are back in action on Saturday evening, when they will travel to Miami to face Norway in the quarter-final, kicking off at 10pm GMT, broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX. Norway are likely to prove formidable opponents, with superstar striker Erling Haaland likely to pose a significant threat to England’s hopes of progressing to the semis.
