Washington Open finals cancelled as players told to find shelter | Tennis | Sport

The Washington Open was forced to cancel both the men’s and women’s finals on Sunday, with both games now rescheduled for Monday. The tournament has been impacted by rain, coupled with lightning.

The men’s doubles finals was impacted in the second set, with British duo Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool a set to the good against Austin Krajicek and Nikola Mektic. After another false start, a statement was released asking players and fans and players to “seek shelter immediately.”

The match did eventually resume with Cash and Glasspool taking the title. That allowed the women’s final between Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala to get underway.

However, with Pegula a set up, the heavens opened again. After several delays and potential restart times being pushed back, a statement was eventually released confirming the cancellation of the matches for the day.

“Matches have been cancelled for tonight,” it read. “The women’s singles final will now take place at 12:00pm (5pm BST) tomorrow.

“The men’s singles final will take place not before 1:00pm (6pm BST) tomorrow. Ticketing information to come soon.”

The men’s final will see Taylor Fritz come up against Rafael Jodar. The extra delay may come as good news to the Spaniard, who played late into the night in his semi-final clash against Alejandro Tabilo on Saturday.

It’s not only the Washington Open that has been impacted by the adverse weather; matches in the Canadian Open in Toronto and Montreal were also forced to be rescheduled.

Play was halted between Magdalena Frech and Leolia Jeanjean in Toronto, with tournament organisers later confirming on social media: All matches have been cancelled for tonight. Sunny skies in our future. Action resumes tomorrow!”

In Montreal, organisers confirmed: The August 2nd evening session (Session 3) has been cancelled. Please note that our ticketing team will contact ticket holders shortly to present the options available to them.
