Arsenal‘s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes is quickly emerging as the biggest saga of the summer transfer window. The midfielder is believed to be a top target for the Gunners, who are looking to improve their options in the engine room ahead of the new Premier League season.

Their interest in the Newcastle skipper has been well documented for quite some time, but there had been a lack of concrete movement until very recently. It finally seems as though Arsenal are ramping up their pursuit of his signature and there is said to be optimism that a deal can be agreed. However, as we have seen in previous transfer windows, doing business with Newcastle is rarely straightforward.

Those in power at St James’ Park were quick to wave away the proposal, according to Chronicle Live, although it’s not known how much was offered.

Meanwhile, a separate report from L’Equipe suggests that personal terms have already been finalised on a contract until the summer of 2031.

However, it should be noted that the same report claims a transfer fee has also been agreed, which doesn’t appear to be the case.

At the moment, Guimaraes is in La Manga for Newcastle’s pre-season training camp, having arrived to join the rest of his team-mates on Monday.

It was initially reported over the weekend that he had failed to attend, but Chronicle Live have insisted that he was always scheduled to report back on Monday and did not break any rules.

The midfielder is expected to reiterate his desire to join Arsenal in discussions with Newcastle chiefs, who are reluctant to sell him after losing Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon earlier this summer.

Newcastle have not made it clear how much they would accept in exchange for Guimaraes’ signature. They allowed Tonali to join Tottenham in a deal worth £100m, while Gordon moved to Barcelona for a transfer fee in the region of £75m.

Other reports have suggested that Eddie Howe chose to step down as Magpies manager partly because he believed that Guimaraes would eventually be sold.

It remains to be seen how the situation will play out, but with Arsenal having submitted an opening bid, it might not be long before something happens one way or another.
