Wimbledon attendee buys strawberries and cream and is floored by cost
Lylaa Ali Shaikh, who goes by Salt and Shaikh on TikTok, confessed she simply had to sample the delicacy during her recent trip to Wimbledon, though the cost left her rather taken aback. According to her, the price came as quite a surprise, given just how popular the sweet indulgence is at the prestigious annual tennis tournament.
It isn’t the first occasion someone has spoken out on the matter either. Last year, another visitor also shared their own experience of sampling strawberries and cream at the celebrated event.
In a clip posted online, Lylaa said: “People say Wimbledon is expensive, but when the famous strawberries and cream are only £2.85, is it really? I was on a mission to find out if they are actually worth it.
“Did you know Wimbledon gets through 2.5m strawberries every single championship? Every single strawberry is freshly picked and delivered daily from the same family-run farm in Kent.”
She added: “During our visit, they actually let us make our own portion. Firstly, we picked up our box, then we pulled off the green tops of the strawberries. Mind you, you can only have 10 strawberries per portion.
“Then it was time to drown them in cream. I’m not usually a strawberries and cream person, but this actually converted me.
“The strawberries were very juicy and obviously very fresh. These strawberries are some of the nicest strawberries I’ve had.
“The cream added that silky smooth addition. The cream actually coated the strawberries perfectly without overpowering.
“£2.85 at Wimbledon. Genuinely one of the best value things I’ve eaten all summer.”
Evidently, Lylaa was delighted with the cost. She felt the delicacy represented excellent value for money.
Why are strawberries so popular at Wimbledon?
Strawberries and cream have remained a Wimbledon tradition for years. This is believed to originate from the earliest days of the championship, during the Victorian era, when the fruit represented a seasonal luxury.
During that period, they were exclusively available for several weeks in June and July. This meant they aligned ideally with the tennis Grand Slam, and they remain incredibly popular there today.
It’s understood an impressive 140,000 servings are distributed annually at the tournament. On average, this equates to 28,000 kilograms of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream being consumed.
