World Cup 2026 manager announces shock resignation as statement released | Football | Sport
The manager of a team competing at this year’s FIFA World Cup has announced his shock resignation with a statement issued to fans.
Tunisia’s Herve Renard has confirmed he will step down as the African nation’s boss after just 18 days in charge.
He took on the job after Tunisia sacked his predecessor, Sabri Lamouchi, following their disastrous 5-1 defeat to Sweden in the opening game of Group F.
Renard, 57, was unable to turn the side’s form around, however, crashing out of the tournament with no points after defeats to Japan and the Netherlands.
Posting on Instagram, Renard confirmed his exit.
He said, “Before leaving, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the FTF for allowing me to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
“It was an honour to wear Tunisia’s colours and to live this unforgettable experience.
“I wish this Tunisian team the best for the future.
“I am convinced that it will continue to grow, to thrill an entire nation, and to write brilliant chapters in its history.
“Thank you to everyone who accompanied me throughout this journey.
“I wish you great success in the future. My journey is coming to an end.”
After Tunisia’s 4-0 defeat to Japan in their second group game, Renard revealed he had only signed a short term contract with the side.
He said: “If they proposed to me a real long-term project, and they ask me to stay with Tunisia, then why not? I don’t see why I would refuse it.
“I respect the people with whom there will be conversations, and we can discuss it.
“I came for the World Cup, and I’m now free to choose the best project for my future.”
