World Cup star’s behaviour during match sparks row as manager hits out | Football | Sport

Cape Verde manager Bubista has expressed his frustration after a Uruguay player stopped helping one of his players to join an attack that led to a goal in their World Cup match. Uruguay and Cape Verde battled out a 2-2 draw in their Group H contest on Sunday night in Miami.

Federico Vinas was helping to treat Cape Verde star Telmo Arcanjo, who was suffering from cramp, in the closing stages of the first half in Florida.

However, Vinas stopped helping Arcanjo to join his Uruguay teammates on a counter-attack, which led to Marcelo Bielsa’s team equalising in the final minutes of the first half.

Cape Verde had taken the lead thanks to a goal from Kevin Pina, but Uruguay equalised through Maximiliano Araujo and took the lead in stoppage time a few minutes later with a goal from Agustin Canobbio.

Substitute Helio Varela went on to equalise for Cape Verde, who held on to secure their second point at the World Cup, which gives them a chance of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament.

However, Bubista has explained why he was not happy with the lack of sportsmanship during the build-up to Uruguay’s equaliser, and went on to send a message to the country’s manager, Bielsa.

“I was upset by that, because Bielsa taught us to have fair play,” Bubista told reporters. “That’s in his press conferences, that’s in the matches that his teams play. We learned what fair play was from his attitude.

“It felt frustrating, but that’s part of the game and part of the experience of growing with the team.

“We could have done something to prevent that situation, we could have kicked the ball off the pitch, but we’re trying to do things our own way.

“It’s also natural that players will sometimes feel pressured and we can say that about the Uruguay team as well. We can only grow from what happened.”

The final round of matches in Group H will see Uruguay face Spain, while Cape Verde will take on Saudi Arabia.

Spain claimed a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their group-stage contest over the weekend, and stand at the top of Group H with four points, two ahead of second-placed Uruguay.
