The third day of Wimbledon is here as the first-round winners return to court. There was no shortage of second-day drama with tears for Iga Swiatek and Britain’s Katie Boulter, Serena Williams and Stan Wawrinka’s emotional goodbyes and some upsets for Ben Shelton and Queen’s champion Francisco Cerundolo.

It has been a dramatic start to the Grand Slam on and off the court so far. Express Sport brings you all you need to know for Wednesday, July 1 at the All England Club…

Novak Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion, but his relationship with the Centre Court crowd has been tumultuous. So it once again proved on Monday as he was riled by their support of Wu Yibing, cupping his ear sarcastically after one point.

The Serb also demonstrated his frustration in response to the ‘Wuuuuuu’ chants that greeted every Wu winner. In a social media post yesterday, alongside a picture of him pointing to his ear, he wrote: “Full moon in the sky. Wolf energy on the court. Woooooooo to round 2.”

But that attitude may simply entice more to support Stefanos Tsitsipas than him tonight. The pair go head-to-head in the last match on court. Tsitsipas hasn’t beaten Djokovic since 2019, losing their last 11 matches, including the 2023 Australian Open.

Surprisingly, despite 14 bouts in total, this is their first contest on grass. Novak had to fight hard in round one and Tsitsipas has the talent to test him. If the Greek gets the crowd on side, things could get tasty again.

They share the same first name, and they’re both Spanish. They’re also both pretty good at tennis. Rafael Jodar has been nicknamed the ‘next Rafael Nadal‘ after reaching the French Open quarter-finals on debut a few weeks ago. He also made the last eight at the Madrid Open and Italian Open.

His first-ever match on grass at the Tour level saw him blitz Britain’s Felix Gill in straight sets. Now, the 23rd seed – who is still just 19 – faces countryman Pablo Carreno Busta. He’s had a remarkable rise, given he wasn’t even a top-50 player before April.

Carreno Busta was given a walkover win against Denis Shapovalov in round one. That was his first Wimbledon win at the eighth attempt, but he still hasn’t seen through victory at SW19 on court. All eyes are on Jodar to see if he can back up his prodigious promise on his Championships debut.

After dumping out Britain’s Hannah Klugman, 2024 Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejcikova – now an unseeded player having previously been No.2 in the world – takes on new French Open champion Mirra Andreeva.

Krejcikova, who ruled Roland Garros herself back in 2021, has a 1-3 record against Russian teenager Andreeva. They met at Wimbledon when Andreeva enjoyed her breakout run three years ago at just 16.

Now 19, Andreeva reached the quarter-finals a year ago and will be eager to go one better this year, but admitted to her Czech second-round opponent: “She’s a two-time Grand Slam champion. She’s very experienced. She’s playing well on grass. So for sure it’s not going to be an easy match for me.”

Today could be Dan Evans’ last ever match at Wimbledon. After being denied a singles wildcard, the Brit teams up with Henry Searle to face ninth seeds Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin first on Court 15.

The 36-year-old Davis Cup champion has confirmed he will retire after this tournament. “I have been thinking about [retirement] for a long time, so I had plenty of time to get my head around it,” he said. “I’m happy with my decision as I knew it was time. I’m really looking forward to what’s next.”
