Emma Raducanu match suspended in chaotic scenes while Brit one set up | Tennis | Sport
Emma Raducanu was leading 1-0 in sets when he clash with Camila Osorio was brought to an abrupt end because of a weather interruption. The British No.1 is in Australia, preparing for the first Grand Slam of the year, which gets underway in Melbourne this weekend.
After losing her only match at the United Cup in Perth last weekend, Raducanu entered the Hobart International for a bit of extra time on court. The former US Open champion took the first set against Osorio, but was losing in the second when the WTA 250 event was forced to stop.
While frustrating for the fans in attendance, the weather interruption has come at a good time for Raducanu, who now has the chance to regroup before returning to play out the rest of the contest on Wednesday. It’s a slight blip in her preparation for the Australian Open, but the 23-year-old will at least benefit from being seeded for the draw later this week.
Raducanu enjoyed the best year of her career across the majors in 2025, winning at least one match at all four Slams. And heading into the Australian Open, fellow British tennis ace, Tim Henman, called on the former wonderkid to build on that momentum.
He said: “She’s still building up that fitness again and that resilience. I think when I reflect on 2025, she finished 29 in the world, which I think is a very solid year, but if she can continue to build the physical resilience and also the speed and power that goes with that, then there’s no doubt in my mind that she can finish in the top 20 this year because her ball striking and her tennis ability is extremely high level.
Pointing towards the Hobart International as a good warm-up event, he continued: “It’s early on in the season. Hopefully she can start to build momentum because that’s what you need. You need matches and wins. Hobart’s a good opportunity, it does look pretty windy and not the easiest conditions, so whatever happens there, hopefully she can come to Melbourne and have a good run.”
Raducanu will be hoping to wrestle back control when the match resumes tomorrow, as she targets a spot in the second round against Magdalena Frech.
