Adam Ramsay-Peaty‘s unusual decision to take his wife’s surname left Gordon Ramsay stunned. The former Olympian tied the knot with Holly, the second-eldest daughter of celebrity chef Ramsay, towards the end of last year. They are now expecting a baby together, while Holly was in attendance to watch Ramsay-Peaty in action at this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

In a surprise twist to their wedding, the swimmer decided to adopt his partner’s surname. They informed Gordon and his wife, Tana, of their decision the night before the ceremony in December. Earlier this year, Gordon admitted that he was taken aback, saying: “They told us the night before the wedding. I was lost for words. A wonderful suggestion. Very modern.”

Ramsay-Peaty’s marriage took place in the midst of a rift with his own family, particularly his estranged mother.

In the same interview, Gordon refuted suggestions that the swimming star’s parents had been deliberately excluded from the occasion, as they had claimed.

He said: “It’s just upsetting. It’s all self-inflicted from their side, because we’ve done nothing, none of what you’ve read: no rudeness, no ignorance.

“We welcomed them. We sent a chauffeur-driven car for them to come to the engagement party and treated them like royalty. So to get that barrage of press was very hurtful. Tana took it very seriously.”

The six-time Olympic champion resumed competition this month at the Commonwealth Games and has secured two bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Supported by his wife, he sparked debate with his response to his third-place result in the 100m when stating he “works a lot harder than what it says on the scoreboard”.

Additional controversy emerged when the 31-year-old acknowledged the medals he’s secured in Glasgow this month hold little significance for him.

He said: “Without sounding arrogant, it’s just a piece of metal that’s not really that important. I don’t keep any medals, only the Olympic ones. I have the memories.”

Without elaborating, Ramsay-Peaty seemed to allude to the family troubles he’s facing and indicated they may have contributed to him missing out on gold.

He said in the interview: “It’s hard because I know how hard I’ve worked. I know the s**t I’ve been through, which is no fault of my own. It does take a toll.”
