Skipton Building Society hands Brits tip to make extra £800 in one year | Personal Finance | Finance

As many families prepare for the summer holidays, Skipton Building Society revealed how to make an extra £800 to fund your next trip. The savings experts found that around 80million UK current accounts were earning no interest, according to analysis of CACI data from May 2026.

Rather than starting a time-consuming side hustle, simply moving those balances to a top-paying account can make a noticeable difference. You could earn at least £800 in a year at today’s ISA rates, if you transferred the full annual ISA allowance of £20,000 into a fixed-rate account earning 4%.

He said: “At a time when many are jetting off on their summer holiday, it’s worth remembering that making your savings work harder can be just as effective as finding extra money to save.

“Whether it’s earning a little bit of extra towards flights or accommodation, using a cash ISA can help ensure you’re getting the most out of your savings allowance.

“Yet millions of savers are missing out on returns that could make a difference to their plans by leaving money in little or no interest accounts.

“Everyone’s goals are different, but at a time when households are looking to make their money go further, securing a competitive rate could make a meaningful impact over time.”

As of July 27, TUI was offering bed and breakfast for seven nights in the Spanish island for £709pp, while the Greek island was £726pp, for departures on in a year’s time.

For solo travellers, this could cover the full cost of the holiday, while families could put the return towards the cost of a trip abroad.

The AlRayan Bank 1 Year Fixed Rate Cash ISA is paying 4.7% interest, meaning you would earn even more than £800. Savers must deposit at least £1,000 to open an account.

OakNorth Bank is paying 4.63% on its Fixed Rate Cash ISA. You can open this account with just £1. Or if you would like a high street bank, Tesco is paying 4.4% on its Fixed Rate Cash ISA. You can also open this account with £1.

Skipton Building Society is paying 4.00% AER on its 1-Year Fixed Rate Cash ISA, which would make a return of £800.
