Brit on Spain holiday dies in horror ’22ft balcony fall’ | World | News

A British holidaymaker has died months after suffering catastrophic injuries in a horror balcony fall at a holiday apartment complex in Lanzarote that also claimed the life of a fellow tourist.

Nicholas Thomas, 54, from Cwmbran, Wales, died on July 10 after spending months receiving treatment following the incident at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise. Mr Thomas was one of two men who fell after a wooden balcony bannister reportedly collapsed at around 1.30am while they were on holiday in Spain.

The other victim, Darren Silcox, 56, also from Cwmbran, died just two hours after the fall. At an inquest held at Gwent Coroner’s Court, coroner Rose Farmer said Mr Thomas had fallen between 15 and 22 feet before being rushed to Dr Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote, GB News reports.

After receiving initial treatment in Spain, Mr Thomas was flown back to the UK in November.

He was treated at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, Grange University Hospital and later the University Hospital Llandough, where he died from his injuries.

Spanish police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether inadequate maintenance or safety measures contributed to the balcony collapse.

The inquest into Mr Thomas’s death has been adjourned until April 14 next year while investigations continue.

During the separate inquest into Mr Silcox’s death, Mrs Farmer concluded he died from a traumatic brain injury caused by the fall, along with skull fractures and skull lacerations.

Paying tribute, local county councillor David Daniels described Mr Silcox, a father of two, as a “lovely guy”.

“Darren and his wife were at the heart of the community and had ran the shops for many decades,” he told the BBC.

Both inquests have been adjourned pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation in Spain.
