Manchester United are enduring a frenetic start to the summer transfer window as Michael Carrick looks to stamp his mark on the squad ahead of his first full campaign. The former midfielder was confirmed as permanent manager after guiding United to a third-place finish and securing a return to the Champions League. The early indications are highly encouraging, with midfielder Ederson on the brink of completing his switch from Atalanta.

Offloading unwanted players will also be essential, and headway has been made on that front, with Rasmus Hojlund converting his loan spell at Roma into a permanent move. Meanwhile, the future of fellow loanee Marcus Rashford remains up in the air as Barcelona deliberate over whether to sign the England international on a permanent basis.

It shapes up to be a frantic summer as United lay the groundwork for what they hope will be a serious title tilt next season. Express Sport rounds up the very latest news from Old Trafford…

Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has committed to a fresh one-year contract, Manchester United have announced. The 40-year-old, who boasts three England caps, has featured just three times for the first team since rejoining Old Trafford for a second stint in 2021.

Heaton progressed through United’s academy system but has represented numerous other sides, including Burnley and Aston Villa, throughout his extensive career. Heaton, who made his senior bow at Swindon while on loan from United in 2005, commented: “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United.

“You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”

Heaton has served as deputy to Senne Lammens, who has held the number one spot since arriving at the club last summer, and Bayindir. And director of football Jason Wilcox said: “We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year. Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.

“Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne [Lammens] throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”

Trabzonspor v RAMS Basaksehir - Turkish Super Lig

Trabzonspor’s president has revealed the club are engaged in daily discussions with Andre Onana regarding a permanent deal for the United goalkeeper. The Cameroon international lost his starting berth to Altay Bayindir earlier in the season before being sent on loan to the Turkish Super Lig outfit.

Following a difficult period at Old Trafford, Onana has enjoyed an encouraging season, assisting Trabzonspor in achieving a commendable third-place finish behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce while lifting the Turkish Cup.

The Turkish outfit are now keen to make his stay permanent, with president Ertugrul Dogan stating: “We speak with Onana every day. We won’t have any financial difficulties.”

United, who paid Inter Milan an initial £43.8m for Onana, will need to accept a financial loss should they wish to part ways with him this summer.

Dogan confirmed his side are willing to explore alternatives if an agreement cannot be reached, stating: “We’ll make the necessary sacrifices. I don’t think we will experience any setbacks. But if we do, we will find another goalkeeper of the same quality.”
