Man Utd’s message to Newcastle about Sandro Tonali transfer as huge price set | Football | Sport

Manchester United have informed Newcastle they do not plan to sign Sandro Tonali this summer because of his £100million price tag. Newcastle have long been bracing themselves for Tonali’s potential exit this summer, with the sourcing of a replacement having featured prominently in their transfer planning since the spring. The Italian joined the Magpies in 2023 from AC Milan and the deal was a remarkable coup for the club as they made their return to the Champions League.

With Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali has formed one of the most formidable midfield partnerships in the Premier League. Tonali was forced to endure a 10-month ban imposed due to gambling violations but stood firmly behind him and have reaped the rewards. Yet last season, speculation grew over his desire to move on, particularly with the club having fallen short of European qualification. Tottenham have emerged as an unexpected suitor, with Roberto de Zerbi said to be especially keen.

Arsenal also have genuine interest, and Newcastle have been under no illusions that Tonali could potentially move on.

The Telegraph reports that key figures at St James’ Park have been anticipating Tonali’s departure for several months, with recruitment meetings already focused on identifying suitable replacements.

One club who will not be entering the race for Tonali is Man United, despite their pressing need to bolster their midfield. Ederson is poised to join from Atalanta while West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is another top target.

The Red Devils had been keeping a close eye on developments with Tonali but have now directly informed Newcastle they will not be pursuing the Italian, believing the combined cost of the transfer fee and the player’s wage demands to be prohibitive.

Arsenal, buoyed by their Premier League triumph, would represent a compelling destination, though the Gunners already boast Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi among their midfield options. They are equally keen to strengthen their attacking ranks.

Manchester City could yet make their move as they embark on a new chapter following Pep Guardiola‘s departure. They are seeking a long-term successor to Rodri, and it remains to be seen whether they pursue a deal for Elliot Anderson, with the potential transfer now being touted as a £120million move.

Newcastle, however, would not allow Tonali to depart on the cheap, with the Magpies’ valuation sitting at around the £100m mark.

Their urgency to offload another prized asset has been eased by their decision to sanction Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona for £70m.
