Aston Villa are set to close their North Stand for the entirety of next season as they accelerate plans to expand Villa Park, with the stadium’s capacity expected to rise to 50,000. To ensure those ambitions are achieved in good time, the club have opted to shut the stand and take it out of use for the upcoming campaign.
Villa announced nearly 12 months ago that they intended to increase the North Stand’s capacity from 5,000 to 12,000, with a completion date set for the end of 2027. Villa have now chosen to fast-track the redevelopment. The stand, which sits directly opposite the iconic Holte End, will undergo a major transformation, with construction due to be completed by the summer of next year, making it fully operational for the 2027/28 season.
The Premier League outfit, who also look set to feature in the Champions League next term, will see their matchday capacity fall to approximately 37,000 before enjoying a substantial boost the following year. Villa Park currently holds 42,640 supporters.
Villa have stated that the new stand will incorporate operational efficiencies, which will reduce costs and streamline the construction process, according to the Birmingham Mail. Improvements to the North Stand will also deliver new first-team changing, medical and physiotherapy facilities.
Francesco Calvo, Villa’s president of business operations, said: “Temporarily reducing Villa Park’s capacity is not a decision we take lightly. However, it is the right decision and one that we have made with our supporters and the long-term future of the club at the heart of our thinking.
“By completing the redevelopment in one season, we reduce disruption, improve the Villa Park experience more quickly and ensure we are investing responsibly while remaining compliant with financial regulations.”
The temporary shutdown of the North Stand will result in affected season ticket holders being moved to alternative sections. The club has confirmed that those impacted will be given the chance to renew their tickets in other areas of the ground at the same price point. Families will likewise be permitted to relocate together.
Those affected will also receive priority access to return to the newly redeveloped North Stand upon its reopening, with Villa aiming to provide the same or comparable seats wherever possible.
Villa have established themselves as consistent contenders amongst the Premier League’s top six, largely thanks to the influence of Unai Emery. The Spaniard has guided the club into European competition for the past three consecutive seasons, with that remarkable run expected to continue this year.
