The Barcelona midfielder publicly hit out at Ayala and has offered new evidence to FIFA’s investigation of events. He told Diari de Terrassa: “Someone who confesses to being sorry, but justifies a punch by claiming that it was a response to something I said, is probably not sorry…because I didn’t say anything to him. So I don’t need him to apologise.

“What really defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to accept it with humility, truth and dignity. When my children, my family and so many fans watch the game, I want them to be proud of how we compete, how we win and, above all, of our behaviour.

“The importance of football means we players are role models for children and new generations, and that carries a great responsibility. But thankfully, what really matters is that we experienced an incredible World Cup, the world saw it and we are world champions after a lot of hard work.”

Olmo will certainly not be amused by Infantino’s thoughts on the Argentines’ conduct throughout the tournament. A letter penned by the FIFA chief to Argentinian FA president Caludio Tapia was recently leaked.

As part of the lengthy letter, Infantino wrote: “Please send my sincere congratulations to all who have contributed to this magnificent result: to the players, to coach Lionel Scaloni, as well as to the coaching and medical staff and, of course, to the many fans who have accompanied and encouraged the team throughout the competition.

“These victories are always the fruit of constant work, professionalism and attention to detail, but also of passion, commitment and love for this wonderful sport. All this augurs a very promising future and, without a doubt, will pave the way for new and great successes for Argentine football.
