The base salary and varying match fees that World Snooker Championship referees take home | Other | Sport
It demands years of dedication, passing rigorous examinations and working up through the lower ranks before earning the opportunity to officiate at elite ranking events, including the sport’s flagship tournament at the Crucible Theatre. While they may not contend with the same degree of confrontation witnessed in sports such as football or rugby, snooker referees nonetheless fulfil a vital function.
How much are they paid?
Precise salaries are not made public, but estimates offer a reasonable indication of how earnings compare. At entry level, referees can expect to earn approximately £4,000 as a base salary, with match fees of around £50 as they accumulate experience.
At the professional level, referees are believed to command a base salary of roughly £20,000 per year, bolstered by match fees. For major tournaments, those fees can surpass £500 per match – meaning officials progressing deep into events such as the World Championship can considerably enhance their overall earnings.
Lower-tier events may pay as little as £70 per match, underlining the considerable variation depending on the standard of competition. Governing bodies also routinely cover travel, accommodation and meal expenses for major tournaments, adding further appeal to the position.
Who are the top referees?
Some of the sport’s most recognisable officials, including Jan Verhaas, Paul Collier and Olivier Marteel, have overseen multiple world finals. These officials perform at the very highest level of the game, where consistency, authority and composure are paramount.
What about female referees?
The number of female referees in the men’s professional game has increased considerably in recent years. Trailblazer Michaela Tabb made history by becoming the first woman to officiate a World Championship final, presiding over victories for John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Since then, officials such as Desislava Bozhilova, who oversaw last year’s World Championship final, and Tatiana Woollaston have become established figures on the circuit, with Bozhilova reportedly amongst the highest-paid female referees.
