All you need to know about the World Cup suspension rules after Declan Rice’s booking
- Declan Rice received his second yellow card of the tournament against Mexico but will not be banned from a potential quarter-final due to the booking. That’s because the Arsenal star’s first yellow came in the group stage.
-
At the 2026 World Cup, any player who accumulates two yellow cards across the knockout rounds is given an automatic one-match suspension. This specific danger window spans from the newly introduced Round of 32 up through the completion of the quarter-finals.
-
All yellow cards received during the group stage were completely wiped clean ahead of the knockout phase. This reset ensured that players entering the Round of 32 started with a perfectly blank disciplinary slate.
-
A second clean slate occurs immediately after the quarter-finals are finished, wiping all single yellow cards before the semi-finals begin. This tactical rule ensures that no player can mistakenly miss the World Cup final purely through card accumulation.
-
If a player receives a direct red card or two yellow cards in a single match, they are immediately sent off and suspended for the next game. For extremely serious or violent conduct, FIFA reserves the right to extend this ban past a single match.
-
Following England‘s hard-fought victory over DR Congo, midfielder Jude Bellingham is officially sitting on one yellow card. If he receives another caution against Mexico or in a potential quarter-final match, he will be forced to sit out the following crucial knockout match.
-
Midfielder Declan Rice also picked up a booking during the match against Mexico, placing him in the exact same disciplinary danger. He was booked during the group stages, but will not serve a suspension due to the bookings being wiped.
-
Because single cautions are wiped before the semi-finals, both Bellingham and Rice will have their individual warnings completely erased if England reaches the final four. Consequently, they would only miss the final if they are shown a red card during the semi-final itself.
